Three Birds Transform a 1920s Bungalow with Sustainable Design

Exploring the environmentally conscious choices that capture the essence of ‘Cali Cool’ - aesthetically and functionally

Three Birds Renovations project ‘House 17’ was a 1920s California bungalow with rustic charm that was in need of cosmetic and structural modernisation. The design brief from its owners was for Three Birds Renovations to perfect a balance that “nods to its heritage while fully embracing contemporary living.”

Informed by the bungalow’s original style, Three Birds Renovations looked towards ‘Cali Cool’ interior design, a natural evolution of the Californian inspiration with improved sustainability.

‘Cali Cool’ is more than a veneer

Though it appears effortless, ‘Cali Cool’ is a nuanced interior style that’s as much about function as it is about form. Its relaxed ethos isn’t just about looks, but reflects a laid-back lifestyle that’s in tune with nature and mindful of environmental impact.

To make a warm and inviting home that elicits a sense of calm, Three Birds Renovations embraced modern efficiencies guided by Stegbar, that was passively sustainable - just by the traits of the products used.

Practical considerations for a holistically ‘Cali Cool’ home

A key part of the Californian bungalow renovation was the home's large windows and glass doors, with Three Birds Renovations using Stegbar to achieve a sun-soaked interior that stays comfortable with minimal heating or cooling.

Three Birds Renovations selected Stegbar’s Cedar Timberaul Double Hung Windows, as their sustainable window solution - Timber is a natural insulator limiting the home's carbon impact.

Three Birds Renovations were drawn to how the cedar timber windows - Timberaul Double Hung Windows - had both contemporary and traditional aspects, with natural ventilation benefits through the embedded sashes.

Sydney braves harsh UV rays and strong winds - so when considering the windows more exposed to the elements, Three Birds Renovations used Stegbar’s Alumiere Sliding Stacking Door and Alumiere Fixed Windows. The range is tested and certified for Australian conditions, constructed from durable, low-maintenance aluminum. Alumiere doors and windows offer lasting structural and stylistic appeal - they afford unobstructed expansive views.

Three Birds Renovations knew a key challenge would be how to accommodate the home’s west-facing orientation that could overheat the home with excessive sunlight.

With this in mind, Stegbar recommended Low-E glass - an energy efficient glass with an external clear glass coating to reflect solar heat while allowing light to pass through; The result? A space that’s bright, airy, and significantly less reliant on air conditioning.

Low-E can be applied on the inside of the glass to reflect heat internally and retain warmth, acting as a sustainable offering across Australia’s climate.

Advice for those wanting to transform their home?

The team from Three Birds Renovations has provided advice on what to prioritise before diving into a sustainable home renovation project.

  1. Follow a function-first approach:
  • “Yes, windows and doors need to look fab, but they also need to work for your lifestyle. Do you need better ventilation? More privacy? Noise reduction? Think through all the practicalities before you start picking finishes.”
  1. Balance old and new:
  • “If you're renovating an older home, choose elements that honour its original character while layering in modern features where they make sense. It’s all about respectful contrast.”
  1. Go big on glazing:
  • “More glass = more light, and more light makes any space feel instantly bigger, brighter, and more beautiful.”
  1. Layer in textures:
  • “Don’t be afraid to mix materials - timber, aluminium, different hardware finishes. These details add depth, personality, and a unique touch to your space.”
  1. Get expert advice:
  • “Trust us - having a knowledgeable team like Stegbar in your corner makes all the difference when it comes to getting the technical stuff just right, without losing sight of your style goals.

In transforming House 17, Three Birds Renovations proved that sustainability and style don’t have to exist in separate worlds. With thoughtful choices and expert collaboration, they created a home that honours the past, embraces the present, and is built for a more conscious future.

SUSTAINABLE WINDOW SOLUTION FAQ

How much energy can Low-E glass save in Australian homes?

In Sydney's climate zone, Low-E glass can reduce cooling costs by 15-25% and heating costs by 10-15%. The exact savings depend on home orientation, size, and existing insulation levels.

Are timber windows worth the extra cost?

Yes, sustainably sourced timber windows offer superior thermal performance (U-Values as low as 1.5), longer lifespan (50+ years), and lower lifetime costs compared to standard alternatives.

How do I maintain cedar windows in Australian conditions?

Cedar timber windows require cleaning every 6 months and refinishing every 5-7 years. Use light-coloured, high-LRV paints to reflect heat and extend coating life.

Can sustainable windows help achieve energy star ratings?

Absolutely. Energy efficient windows contribute significantly to NABERS and Green Star ratings, with proper glazing selection helping achieve 6+ star energy ratings.

What's the difference between Low-E glass and tinted glass?

Low-E glass reflects heat while maintaining maximum light transmission. Tinted glass reduces both heat and light. Low-E is typically preferred for living areas where natural light is important.
