What Reveal Size Do I Need?

When it comes to installing windows, one term you'll frequently encounter is "window reveal." What is a Window Reveal?

A window reveal is the timber surround of a window unit. It serves as the interface between the window frame and the wall, providing structural support. Imagine the flat timber edge that juts out slightly from the glass of your window – that's the reveal. It not only helps to fix the window into the stud wall frame but also enhances the overall look of your window installation 

Boxed Window Reveals are the most common type, where the reveal is fitted to all four sides of the window. It's typically used when you plan to fit architraves around the full perimeter of the window.

Why is the Right Size Important?

Selecting the right size reveal is crucial for both the functionality and aesthetics of your window installation. An incorrectly sized reveal can lead to issues such as poor insulation, water ingress, and an unprofessional finish. Here’s how you can determine the correct size for your project:

1. Measure the Stud Size: The reveal size should match the combined width of the timber stud, the internal lining, and the cavity (for brick veneer). For example, if you have a 75mm stud and a 10mm internal lining, your reveal size should be around 85mm 
2. Consider the Cladding: For external cladded applications, add the thickness of the cladding to your reveal size. For brick veneer, include the cavity size in your calculations 
3. Standard Sizes: At Stegbar, we offer a range of standard reveal sizes to suit various construction types. These standards vary from state to state and we have listed the most common reveal sizes below.

• 100mm reveal: Available in all state (NSW, VIC, QLD and SA)
• 116mm reveal: Available in NSW, QLD and SA
• 136mm reveal: Available in VIC
• 138mm reveal: Available in NSW, QLD and SA

When selecting a reveal, this will add 20mm in width/height to each side of the window.

For example, a 1200 x 1200 window, with a reveal, will become 1240 x 1240 as we have added 20mm of reveal to each side.

So the opening size required to fit this window is 1240 x 1240 - not 1200 x 1200 as that is just the frame.
